2019: In which I did not take many photos

At the end of each year, I like to write a retrospective, looking back on what I’ve accomplished during the year, and my goals for the next 12 months. This year’s post will be mercifully short.

At the end of 2018 I made some resolutions for 2019:

  1. Get a large format lens for the Chroma, and take 10 photos with it
  2. Finish setting up the darkroom at home, and print 10 images successfully
  3. Keep writing!

I accomplished one out of three of these – I did at least, keep writing. In fairness, I do also have a lens for my Chroma camera now, but I have not managed to take any photos with it. The darkroom is not going to happen – the storage cupboard I intended to use, has been filled full of stuff and it’s unlikely that will change now.

In 2020, I WILL set up and take photos with the Chroma. They don’t have to be good, they just have to be photos. I will try to get back into the habit of taking a film camera around with me all the time, too – like the saying goes, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

On a personal note, 2019 has been mostly awful and I hope 2020 is a bit better. I hope my mental health improves, and I hope I can take positive steps towards making that happen this year, as waiting for the Depression Fairy to wave her magic wand hasn’t worked so far.

More positively, I’ve enjoyed reading the photo blogs I follow, and thanks to everyone who has taken the time to comment on mine. I’ve also enjoyed continuing to write (albeit sporadically) for Casual Photophile in 2019 – the guys there are constant sources of inspiration and good humour. In gear news, I finally bought my dream 35mm camera – the Pentax LX. It’s a beautiful, understated feat of engineering, and does everything I need it to do, while looking like the mutt’s nuts.

Here’s to 2020 – because things can only get better, right?

  1. Congratulations on keeping writing, and I for one have enjoyed reading your writing, here, on Casual Photophile, and on twitter. I do hope you manage to beat the Black Dog for most of the year, but also that, like Churchill, you can continue to achieve despite it. All the best for the next year…

PS, I think I might have just managed 10 photos on my Chroma this year, of which I think 2 were reasonable well exposed, mostly in focus in the right places, and not suffering from light leaks. TBH I’m not sure I CBA with LF!

Hello Chris! 🙂 Thanks for the nice comment – fingers crossed that 2020’s dog is smaller, at least.

That’s pretty funny about your Chroma – I’m glad I’m not the only one slightly afraid of it! I know I get frustrated easily, so I need to pick a day and a subject when I can really pay attention and not get annoyed. For now, I’ll stick with 35mm!

  2. Things WILL get betterer. Let’s hang out more in 2020 and take more pictures xx

Yes! Very good plan. Walking and photos with cream teas at the end xx

  3. I’m sorry the blues had to be a part of your story this year. Solidarity. Better days are always ahead.
